Is dropshipping allowed on Amazon?
Yes, dropshipping is allowed on Amazon as long as you follow Amazon's Drop Shipping Policy. You must be the seller of record, identify yourself as the seller on packing slips, invoices and external packaging, remove any documents identifying a third-party supplier before shipment, and accept and process returns yourself.
Buying from another online retailer and having that retailer ship directly to your customer breaks the policy. That is why Cloverlight's Amazon dropshipping model is built on a forwarding warehouse.
How does a forwarding warehouse keep Amazon dropshipping within policy?
This table summarises how the flow is set up; it is not a legal reading of the policy. Amazon makes every account and listing decision.
| Drop Shipping Policy requirement | How the forwarding-warehouse model meets it |
|---|---|
| You must be the seller of record | The order comes from your store and ships to the customer in your name |
| You must appear as the seller on slips, invoices and packaging | The item is repacked and relabelled at the warehouse |
| Third-party supplier documents must be removed | The Amazon retail invoice and slip never go into the parcel |
| You must accept and process returns | Returns stay with the seller and are tracked as part of account operations |

What does Amazon dropshipping software do?
Amazon dropshipping software automatically buys each marketplace order from the supply source and tracks fulfillment. Cloverlight Order Bot pools Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy and TikTok Shop orders, places verified Amazon purchases to your forwarding-warehouse address from isolated buyer profiles, and writes the Amazon order number and cost back to the source.
Order Bot never buys the same order twice and never tries to bypass CAPTCHA or multi-factor authentication; it stops wherever a human needs to approve.
How do you start Amazon dropshipping?
- Choose your marketplace and company structure.
- Open an Amazon seller account and complete identity verification.
- Set up a forwarding warehouse and shipping templates.
- Get approval for restricted brands and categories; register resale certificates for US purchases.
- List a first catalog with profit calculated after fees, shipping, returns and currency.
- Monitor account health metrics every day.
Why a team that runs accounts on its own software?
Most Amazon dropshipping providers either sell software or manage accounts by hand without any. Cloverlight does both: the accounts we manage run on software we build. When a process breaks, the team that fixes the software is the same team running the account.
How is Amazon dropshipping different from FBA and online arbitrage?
Amazon dropshipping, FBA and online arbitrage differ in three ways: where the inventory sits, who packs the parcel and whose name the customer sees on it. The table below compares four common models against Amazon's Drop Shipping Policy and Amazon's own description of FBA.
| Model | Who holds inventory | Who packs the parcel | Policy position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forwarding-warehouse model (buy on Amazon → warehouse → customer) | No inventory; the item is bought after the order arrives | The warehouse repacks it in the seller's name | Amazon invoice and slip are removed; the seller stays seller of record and handles returns |
| Supplier dropshipping (wholesaler or manufacturer ships direct) | The supplier | The supplier | Requires a written agreement naming you as the only seller of record and unbranded packaging |
| FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) | Amazon fulfillment centers, shipped in before the sale | Amazon | Amazon picks, packs, ships and handles customer service and returns |
| Online arbitrage with direct shipping (retailer → customer) | The retailer | The retailer | Strictly prohibited under the Drop Shipping Policy because another seller appears on the parcel |
Should you choose a forwarding warehouse or FBA?
The real trade-off between the forwarding-warehouse model and FBA is capital versus delivery speed. With FBA you buy inventory up front and send it to Amazon; according to Amazon's FBA page, those items can be offered with free two-day shipping through Prime. With a forwarding warehouse, you buy only after a customer orders, so there is no unsold stock to write off.
Dropshipped orders are seller-fulfilled (FBM, which Amazon calls the Merchant Fulfilled Network), so delivery time, tracking and returns are on you. The warehouse model can suit testing demand across a wide catalog, while FBA can suit products with proven sales velocity.
What happens if you break Amazon's Drop Shipping Policy?
According to the Drop Shipping Policy page in Amazon Seller Central, violations may result in Amazon restricting your ability to sell through the Merchant Fulfilled Network (MFN). Since a dropshipping account ships almost every order through MFN, that restriction effectively stops the business.
The policy specifically names buying from a third party, "including Amazon or another seller in Amazon's stores," and having that party ship straight to your customer as strictly prohibited without exception when the shipment does not identify you as the seller of record. An Amazon box with an Amazon invoice arriving at your customer's door is the most common way sellers trip this rule; the forwarding-warehouse model adds a repacking step to break that link.
How much does it cost to dropship on Amazon?
The cost of Amazon dropshipping is the selling plan, a referral fee on every sale, the product itself, warehouse handling and shipping, returns and currency conversion. According to Amazon's pricing page on sell.amazon.com, the Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan costs $39.99 per month in the US. Referral fees are a category percentage of the total price or a per-item minimum, whichever is greater; the page lists 8% for Electronics and 15% for Home and Kitchen as examples.
- Fees change, so always confirm current amounts on Amazon's own pricing page.
- If these lines are not calculated per product before listing, a fast-selling item can still lose money on every order.
| Cost line | Paid to | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Selling plan | Amazon | Individual: $0.99 per item; Professional: $39.99 per month |
| Referral fee | Amazon | Category percentage or minimum, whichever is greater |
| Product cost | Supply source | Paid after the order comes in |
| Warehouse and shipping | Warehouse and carrier | Per-parcel handling plus weight-based postage |
| Returns and cancellations | Seller | The policy makes returns the seller's responsibility |
| Currency conversion | Bank or payment provider | Shifts margin when income and costs are in different currencies |
What is Amazon dropshipping?
Amazon dropshipping is a seller-fulfilled (FBM) model in which you list a product on Amazon without holding inventory, buy it from a supplier after the order comes in and ship it to the customer under your own name. What separates it from simple reselling is Amazon's Drop Shipping Policy: you must be the seller of record, and only your business can appear on the shipment.
Under the policy, an Amazon dropshipper needs an agreement naming them as the only seller of record, must be the only seller identified on packing slips, invoices and outer packaging, must remove anything that identifies a third-party supplier before the order ships, and must accept and process customer returns. A shipment that skips any of these steps breaks the policy, however fast it arrives.
- Inventory: you buy only after a sale, so there is no unsold stock.
- Fulfillment: orders are merchant-fulfilled, so tracking, delivery time and returns are your responsibility.
- Profit: what's left of the sale price after Amazon fees, product cost, forwarding warehouse, shipping and return losses.
How do you calculate Amazon dropshipping profit?
Amazon dropshipping profit is your net profit per order multiplied by monthly order count, minus the Professional plan fee. On Amazon US, sell.amazon.com lists the Professional plan at $39.99 a month, and each sale carries a referral fee equal to the category percentage of the total price or the category minimum (usually $0.30), whichever is greater. The same page shows 15% for Home and Kitchen and 8% for Computers.
Net profit per order = sale price − referral fee − product cost − warehouse and shipping − return and A-to-z loss allowance − currency difference. Monthly net profit = (net profit per order × orders per month) − $39.99. The table runs that formula on a hypothetical order. None of these numbers come from a real store or a Cloverlight client, and none of them is an earnings claim.
- If product cost in this example rises by $2, net profit per order drops to $2.80. Sourcing cost and return rate move dropshipping margins more than anything else.
- Fees change, so rerun the math against Amazon's current pricing page before listing.
| Line item (hypothetical, Home and Kitchen) | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price (including shipping charged to the buyer) | $40.00 | Assumption |
| Referral fee (15%) | −$6.00 | Amazon pricing page, Home and Kitchen rate |
| Product cost | −$20.00 | Assumption |
| Warehouse handling and shipping to the buyer | −$8.00 | Assumption |
| Return and A-to-z loss allowance (3% of sales) | −$1.20 | Assumption |
| Net profit per order (before plan fee) | $4.80 | Calculation |
| Orders needed to cover the plan fee | $39.99 ÷ $4.80 ≈ 9 orders | Calculation |
How does dropshipping on Amazon US, Canada and Mexico differ?
Amazon US, Canada and Mexico can all run from one North America unified account, but plan fees, minimum referral fees and the amount the referral fee is charged on differ by marketplace. According to Amazon's Global Selling page, linked accounts pay the lower of the USD 39.99 equivalent or the sum of the regional plan fees each month.
- Amazon Canada's pricing page notes that fees, available categories and selling requirements can vary across the three marketplaces, so a category that is open in one may be gated in another.
- Category rates differ too: Amazon Mexico's pricing page lists Electronics at 10%.
- Cross-border shipping from a forwarding warehouse to Canada or Mexico adds transit time, customs and tax obligations; confirm tax questions with an accountant.
| Marketplace | Professional plan | Individual plan | Minimum referral fee (most categories) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon US (amazon.com) | $39.99/month | $0.99 per item sold | $0.30 | Greater of category percentage of total price or the minimum |
| Amazon Canada (amazon.ca) | CAD 29.99/month | CAD 1.49 per item sold | CAD 0.40 | Charged on total sale price, including shipping and gift wrap |
| Amazon Mexico (amazon.com.mx) | MXN 600/month if prior-month sales are MXN 26,000 or more; MXN 75 if below | Not listed on the pricing page | MXN 8.00 (VAT/IVA included) | Charged on total price including shipping, gift wrap and taxes; rates include IVA |
Is Amazon dropshipping worth it, and who should skip it?
Amazon's own 'What is dropshipping?' page lists a lower initial investment and lower financial risk as the main advantages. The same page warns that competition is high, that relying on suppliers exposes you to supply chain disruptions and that the seller is responsible for customer satisfaction. It works for some sellers and not for others.
- Skip it if you need guaranteed income quickly.
- Skip it if you can't fund purchases while you wait for Amazon's payouts.
- Skip it if no one can watch buyer messages and account health every day.
- Skip it if the plan is to buy on Amazon and ship straight to the customer without reading the Drop Shipping Policy.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| You start without buying inventory | Competition is high and margins are thin |
| You can test demand across a wide catalog | Supplier stockouts push up cancellations |
| No unsold stock to write off | Delivery and returns are your responsibility |
| Scaling is relatively easy | A policy violation puts the whole account at risk |
What should you check before you start dropshipping on Amazon?
A handful of checks before the first listing removes most of the early account risk:
- Read the Drop Shipping Policy end to end and decide how every shipment will show you as seller of record.
- Choose a selling plan and confirm referral fees in your target categories.
- Check whether the products need brand or category approval; Cloverlight's free ASIN lookup tool helps here.
- Work out net profit per order for each product; Cloverlight's free Amazon dropshipping profit calculator combines fees, shipping and returns.
- Set up the forwarding warehouse address, shipping template and tracking flow.
- Put a weekly routine in place for ODR, late shipment, cancellation and valid tracking rate.
